The Edmonton Mall is a popular destination that attracts residents and visitors from all over the world. With COVID-19 upending most travel plans and a public health notice to refrain from gathering indoors, it's time you explore what outdoor activities Edmonton has to offer!
There's plenty to do in Edmonton besides heading to the mall. The Edmonton river valley is the heartbeat of the city, and there are many outdoor green spaces that welcome a host of activities.
Check out these three outdoor summer activities for a fun staycation in Edmonton!
Go on a hike at these four trails
The Edmonton river valley boasts a long 160km stretch of maintained pathways that follow the North Saskatchewan River. Considered the most expansive urban parkland in Canada, there is much to be explored by way of hiking, walking or cycling.
Try William Hawrelak Park for an easy hike with the entire family or the Grandin to Groat Loop for a walk that takes you into the forest. The Funicular to Walterdale Loop takes you to picturesque spots featuring the historic steel low-level bridge, the modern Walterdale bridge, and other historic sites.
Elk Island National Park
Only 35 minutes outside of Edmonton, Elk Island National Park is worth the trip for an experience that has you hiking, camping, canoeing, or bison-watching. This oasis is also a refuge for bison, elk, and over 250 bird species and is the perfect destination for wildlife viewing. For those who want to enjoy a picnic or camp overnight, Elk Island's unobstructed big open sky lends to the best stargazing in the area.
Picnic at the University of Alberta Botanic Garden
The University of Alberta Botanic Garden is now open for reservations! Its 97-hectare property (the largest botanic garden in Canada) features beautifully cultivated gardens and plant collections, indoor showhouses, and extensive natural areas.
This botanic garden offers a unique picnic experience for a memorable experience with a friend or beau. When you make a reservation for the Twilight Picnic experience for two, expect a delectable pre-made gourmet picnic box feature the best charcuterie and cheeses in town. And, get exclusive admission to the Garden after hours for an unforgettable stroll amongst breathtaking garden structures. Be sure to reserve your spot early!
